Microgrid Partners
Microgrid Demonstration Project
Enbridge

Enbridge Gas Distribution is Canada’s largest gas distribution utility, and one of the fastest-growing such enterprises in North America. Enbridge Gas Distribution and its affiliates serve more than two million customers in central and eastern Ontario, southwestern Quebec, and parts of northern New York State. Delivering energy for 165 years, Enbridge Gas Distribution added a record 60,000 customers in 2003, began serving 40,000-plus new customers in 2010, and passed a very important company milestone in early 2013 - reaching two million customers strong.

Enbridge Gas contribution to the Cityview Microgrid project included VIK expertise as well as an allocation of resources towards the acquisition of the natural gas generator. The company is interested in learning about Microgrids and how clean natural gas generation can play an important role in this emerging technology.

The carport designed for Alectra Utilities features Tigo DC optimized solar modules by Silfab to maximize power output under fully or partially shaded conditions.

GE Digital Energy

Digital Energy, a division of GE, is a major solutions provider and thought leader in the effort to modernize and optimize how we generate, move and consume energy. Our global team of more than 5,000 employees are inventing, improving and integrating communications, automation, and power delivery technologies to give the century-old electric infrastructure new capabilities, unheard of just a generation ago.

GE's contribution to the Alectra Utilities Microgrid demo project included the Microgrid Control System (MCS) and surrounding engineering design services to assure all distributed energy resources (DER) were integrated into a common control platform. Examples of DER for this project included local loads, generating assets and energy storage devices including the GE Durathon battery technology.

The MCS is based on a supervisory control architecture providing the ability to monitor, track, and forecast load, generation and storage resources throughout the microgrid. The MCS maximizes the use of the DER's and gives commands to dispatchable resources to provide power to the load in the most economical method possible in both grid-connected and islanded mode scenarios.

SMA Canada

SMA Canada is the Ontario-based subsidiary of global PV leader SMA Solar Technology AG. SMA is a power conversion, energy management and service support provider for residential through utility-scale photovoltaic systems. SMA’s leading range of solar inverters and related technologies spans all power classes and is compatible with all module types, resulting in the largest solutions portfolio in the industry.

SMA is a pioneer in AC coupling, which allows for the scalable development of grid-independent systems using solar and other power sources. One of the key components of a hybrid microgrid is an off-grid inverter, such as the SMA Sunny Island. For the Alectra Utilities Microgrid project, three Sunny Island inverters act as the intelligent system manager, creating a high-quality, self-sufficient AC grid and protecting sensitive batteries, thereby extending system life.

RoseWater Energy Group

RoseWater Energy Group has partnered with Alectra Utilities to provide a next-generation energy storage system. The award winning RoseWater Residential Energy Storage HUB will demonstrate two systems utilizing Lithium Ion technology and GE’s Durathon Sodium technology. The HUBs will provide real time data and determine the immediate value of highly distributed energy storage for utilities and homeowners alike. The results will further the findings from a Queen’s University study identifying long term viability and value in load shifting and renewable energy smoothing.
