8% Provincial RebateAs of January 1, 2017, the Government of Ontario is introducing an 8% rebate under the Ontario Rebate for Electricity Consumers Act, 2016 (“The Act”) equal to the provincial portion of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) on the bills of residential, farm, small business and other eligible customers. That’s an 8% rebate for Ontario families, an average savings of approximately $130 annually or $11 each month.

This is part of Ontario’s plan to help people with the costs of everyday living by reducing electricity costs. Across Ontario, about five million residential consumers, farms, and small businesses will benefit from this rebate.

The new rebate will be a separate line item on the electricity bill. Alectra Utilities (formerly PowerStream) will automatically implement these savings onto the bills of eligible customers by July 1, 2017. Applicable savings will be retroactive to January 1, 2017. Timing will depend on the extent of the changes required to billing systems.

Other eligible customers under The Act

If you previously provided Alectra Utilities with a self-declaration form with an eligibility claim as a multi-unit residential service, you will automatically be enrolled to receive this rebate. Please note that if your status has changed since you provided these forms, it is your responsibility to notify Alectra Utilities of that change as it may affect your eligibility to receive the 8% rebate.

Under the additional eligibility criteria provided in The Act, you may be eligible to receive the 8% provincial rebate on your bill. Please read carefully and complete the self-declaration form if you are eligible to receive the 8% rebate. At your earliest convenience, please return the completed form to Alectra Utilities so that your account can be registered to receive the rebate on your electricity bill.

Please note that it is your responsibility to provide accurate information on the form to qualify for the rebate and you may be subject to a third-party audit at any time to verify the information you provided. Failure to do so will lead to the requirement to reimburse the full amount of the 8% rebate to Alectra Utilities.

If you qualify for the rebate, Alectra Utilities will retroactively credit your account for electricity consumption effective January 1, 2017. If the declaration is submitted after January 1, 2019, the rebate will be applied for a maximum of two years from the date you provided us with the completed self-declaration form.
