Improving Reliability - Alectra's 2020 Capital Plan Construction Highlights

Alectra’s 2020 Capital Plan invested approximately $271 million across our service territory for much needed infrastructure improvements. This investment included upgrading aged infrastructure and installing new infrastructure to bring efficient electricity service to your community. Aurora

Replacing underground cables

Alectra continues to invest in replacing deteriorated infrastructure to maintain and improve reliability and service quality. We plan to invest approximately $6.7 million over the next five years in Aurora replacing and rehabilitating underground cables.

  • $2.5 million to replace underground cables on Steeplechase Avenue to decrease outage impacts due to deteriorating underground infrastructure for residential and commercial customers in the area of Bloomington and Bayview. 
Barrie

Replacing underground cables

Working on recommendations within the Independent Electricity System Operator’s Integrated Regional Resource Plan, the Barrie Transformer Station will undergo construction to increase capacity and improve reliability. Hydro One will be leading construction which began in 2020 with plans to have the upgraded transformer station in service by 2022. Existing and future residential, industrial, and commercial customers in the south Barrie area will benefit from the transmission station capacity upgrades. We plan to invest approximately $2.2 million for new feeder integration and station metering at the upgraded Hydro One station.

Alectra also continues to invest in replacing deteriorated infrastructure in Barrie. We plan to invest approximately $18 million over the next five years replacing and rehabilitating poor condition underground cables in the Barrie area to improve reliability and service quality.

In 2020, Alectra invested:

  • $2.8 million to replace deteriorating cables in the Sunnidale Road and Anne Street North area. This project will decrease outage impacts for 3,536 commercial and residential customers. 
Bradford West Gwillimbury

Extending feeder line and adding automation

As Bradford West Gwillimbury continues to grow additional infrastructure is being constructed to serve increasing demand and meet contingency requirements in the area. Alectra plans to invest approximately $1.7 million to extend and upgrade infrastructure from Bridge Street to Miller Park Avenue.

  • The infrastructure extension will provide increased capacity for new residential, industrial, and commercial developments in Bradford West Gwillimbury and will also provide contingency capacity to 2,900 existing customers. Construction on this project began in fall 2020. 
Brampton

Replacing underground cables

Alectra is working on a multi-year voltage conversion project in Brampton in the areas of Williams Parkway, Kennedy Road, Queen Street, Main Street, Harold Street and McLaughlin Road. This $16 million project was initiated in 2018 and is planned to be completed by 2022. It will improve system capacity and grid reliability while reducing electrical outages for 1,468 residential customers and 22 commercial customers.

We also continue to invest in the replacement of aged and deteriorated infrastructure that will improve reliability and service quality throughout the city. Alectra will invest $30 million over the next five years to replace and rehabilitate deteriorated underground cables in Brampton.

In 2020, Alectra invested $5.2 million in underground renewal, including:

  • Cables in the area bounded by Queen Street East, Clark Boulevard, Bramalea Road, Kensington Road and Knightsbridge Road were replaced. This investment is expected to decrease outage impacts due to deteriorating underground system assets for 17 commercial and industrial customers.
  • Cables in the area bounded by Castlemore Road & Goreway Drive and Howden Boulevard & Dixie Road areas were rehabilitated. This investment will help to decrease outage impacts due to deteriorating underground system assets for 1,939 commercial and residential customers. 
Guelph

Reconstructing eleven pole lines

Alectra continues to invest in the replacement of aged and deteriorated infrastructure that will improve reliability and service quality throughout Guelph.

In 2020, Alectra invested:

  • $1M to replace and/or rehabilitate poor condition underground cables and equipment. The major projects were Country Club Drive and Marksam Road Townhouse rebuild.
  • $1.8M to rebuild overhead distribution infrastructure. The major projects were Ferndale Ave, Metcalfe St, Pleasant Rd, Forest Hill Dr and James St W.
Hamilton

Replacing underground cables and adding automation

Alectra continues to make investments in Hamilton to build additional capacity, replace deteriorating infrastructure and upgrade cables to present-day supply standards. These investments will ensure improved reliability, capacity, and efficiency for all residents throughout the city. We plan to invest approximately $30 million over the next five years in the Hamilton area replacing and rehabilitating aged underground infrastructure and $19 million eliminating poor condition low-voltage stations and converting cables to present day supply standards. 

In 2020, Alectra invested:

  • $3.7 million for an infrastructure extension project in the vicinity of Highway 5 and Highway 6 in Waterdown. This project will alleviate capacity issues and provide contingency capacity for 9,756 industrial, commercial, and residential customers. This project was completed in Q1 2021. 
  • $7.5 million in the Hamilton Mountain area to replace underground cables and install upgraded infrastructure to decrease outage impacts due to deteriorating underground cables. 
  • $18 million to upgrade the electricity supply of 4,700 residential and commercial customers served by the Central Municipal Station. This project has been ongoing since 2017 and will be completed by 2023. 
  • $4.7 million to eliminate the Dewitt Municipal Station and upgrade the primary supply voltage of 600 residential and commercial customers served by the station. This project began in 2020 and will be completed by 2023.
Markham

Extending feeder line

Alectra continues to invest in expanding our infrastructure in Markham to accommodate the load growth in the area and replace deteriorating infrastructure to maintain and improve reliability and service quality. Over the next five years, we plan to invest $16 million in Markham to increase capacity and $15 million to replace and rehabilitate poor condition underground cables.

  • $1.3 million to extend cables on 19th Avenue between Leslie Street to Woodbine Avenue to increase supply capacity and contingency options for existing customers in the area. 
  • $4.2 million to replace deteriorated underground cable in the Steeles Avenue East and Fairway Heights area to decrease outage impacts for 270 commercial and residential customers. 
  • $1 million to rehabilitate poor condition underground cable in the John Street and Woodbine Avenue area to decrease outage impacts for 270 commercial and industrial customers in the area.
Mississauga

Extending feeder line

Alectra continues to invest in system expansion to accommodate load growth in Mississauga and replacement of deteriorating infrastructure to maintain and improve reliability and service quality. We plan to invest $22 million over the next five years to increase supply capacity for new customers and increase contingency capacity for existing customers and $25 million to replace or rehabilitate poor condition underground cables to reduce electrical outages.

  • $1.3 million to extend infrastructure in the Port Credit area to serve new residential and commercial customers and to provide contingency capacity for existing customers.
  • $5.8 million to replace deteriorated underground cable in the Folkway Drive and Glen Erin Drive area to reduce outage impacts for 777 residential and commercial customers. 
  • $4.2 million to replace deteriorated underground cable in the Windjammer Road and College Way area to reduce outage impacts for 511 residential and commercial customers. 
  • $1.2 million to replace deteriorated underground cables in the Rathburn Road and Creditview Road area to reduce outage impacts for 781 residential and commercial customers. 
  • $1 million to replace deteriorated underground cables in the area bounded by Derry Road & Winston Churchill Boulevard and Aquitaine Avenue & Glen Erin Drive. This project will reduce outage impacts for 384 residential and commercial customers.
St Catharines

Extending feeder line

Alectra continues to invest in replacing deteriorated infrastructure to maintain and/or improve reliability and service quality in St. Catharines. We plan to invest approximately $7 million over the next five years specifically to replace or rehabilitate poor condition underground cables in the St. Catharines area.

  • Alectra is investing $6.6 million to expand the Bunting M81 feeder to provide increased capacity for the north sections of St. Catharines. The new feeder will support new growth in the area and provide existing customers with contingency capacity. The project is ongoing and on track to be completed in 2022.
Vaughan

Constructing two new feeder lines

Alectra continues to invest and expand the electricity system in Vaughan to accommodate the load growth in the area and maintain and improve reliability and service quality. Over the next five years, we plan to invest $20 million to increase supply and contingency capacity and approximately $25 million specifically to replace and rehabilitate underground cables.

  • $4 million to build new infrastructure to supply the proposed developments in the Vaughan West area. This investment will increase supply capacity and increase contingency options for existing customers in the area.
  • $2.2 million to replace deteriorated underground cables on Jardin Drive and Southview Drive to decrease outage impacts for 174 commercial and residential customers.
  • $1 million to rehabilitate deteriorated underground cables in the area bounded by Pine Valley Drive & Hwy 7 to decrease outage impacts for 801 commercial and residential customers.
