June 24, 2010 PowerStream adds new transformer station to distribution system Station dedicated in the name of former utility general manager, Robert Fabro
MARKHAM, ON ~ PowerStream held a dedication ceremony today for a newly-constructed transformer station that is being added to its distribution system to enhance reliability and better serve customer growth. Located in Markham, just east of the company’s South Operation Centre in the Highway 407 and Woodbine Road area, PowerStream’s 11th transformer station directly connected to the provincial transmission grid, was named in honour of the late Robert Fabro, a former general manager at Markham Hydro, one of the organization’s predecessor utilities. The Robert Fabro Transformer Station, which will help to distribute electricity to PowerStream customers in Markham and Richmond Hill, has the capacity to supply enough electricity for about 40,000 homes. It is PowerStream’s fourth transmission grid direct-connect transformer station located in Markham. The utility currently owns and operates more transmission grid direct- connect transformer stations than any other municipally-owned utility in Ontario and continues to be one of the fastest growing electricity distribution companies in the province. The new transformer station was dedicated in recognition of Fabro’s more than 10 years of service at Markham Hydro. As its general manager from 1986 through 1997, Fabro played a significant role in bringing the utility’s second transmission grid direct-connect transformer station online. His contributions to Markham Hydro left a legacy, which has carried over to PowerStream. “As a member of Markham Council at that time, I had the privilege of working with Robert while he was the general manager at Markham Hydro,” said Town of Markham Mayor and PowerStream Vice Chair, Frank Scarpitti. “He was an outstanding leader whose vision and foresight served the utility and the Town of Markham well.” Also at today’s event was Fabro’s wife Janet, who joined Scarpitti, as well as PowerStream’s Chair, Peter Meffe and the company’s President and CEO, Brian Bentz, in the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the transformer before more than 50 specials guests, former associates and PowerStream employees. “It is fitting that this new transformer station is named in honour of Robert Fabro. He was an industry leader who understood the importance of investing in a utility’s distribution infrastructure in order to ensure the continuity of reliable service to customers,” Meffe added.
