Electricity Retrofit Incentive Program

About the Program

CLICK HERE to read the brochureThe Electricity Retrofit Incentive Program (ERIP) appreciates that when a business is making choices between different equipment options the desired choice is for the most efficient solution, but for financing or timing reasons other choices may be made. ERIP provides financial incentives starting at $400 per kilowatt saved to encourage businesses to install energy-efficient upgrades.

ERIP focuses on lighting, motors, heating ventilation, air conditioning and the overall electricity system of a business. These areas cover the majority of and most important upgrades for businesses operations. The program pays financial incentives to businesses that make energy-efficient upgrades.

The objective of ERIP is to encourage energy conservation and load management by offering incentives for sustainable and measurable energy retrofits that result in on-peak demand savings and/or annual energy savings.

Maintaining a reliable supply of electricity for the province is a government priority. By reducing peak demand, participating businesses will contribute to the increased security of the overall supply of electricity in Ontario.

Two ways to conserve

The ERIP program has two options for businesses: the Prescriptive track and the Custom track:

Prescriptive - This track has predefined energy efficient technologies that match per unit performance providing basis savings measures. These projects tend to involve one-for-one replacements and upgrades to existing systems. The incentive provided to you is based on the quantities of what you install.

Custom - This track is available for those of you who are using a more specific solution to electricity efficiency retrofitting. For these projects, all technology, equipment and systems are evaluated on the basis of their power and energy performance improvement and the incentive offered is based specifically on the level of improvement.

ERIP is supported by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) and administered by PowerStream.

Do you qualify for ERIP?

Applicants for the ERIP program must be PowerStream commercial customers, and may be owners or tenants of business premises that have their electricity supplied by PowerStream. Please note that if you are a tenant, you must obtain permission from the property owner for installation of the measures for which an incentive is claimed.

Financial incentives will be available for pre-approved projects that result in measurable energy savings. These projects may be completed using energy efficient technologies set by the program or may be based on innovative custom initiatives.

How ERIP works

  1. Complete the necessary documents and either fax them to PowerStream at 905-532-4447 or send them via email to erip@powerstream.ca.
  2. PowerStream will schedule and perform a pre-inspection and notify you of approval.
  3. Complete the retrofit within the agreed timeframe.
  4. When the work is complete, forward all of the purchase documentation to PowerStream, and notify PowerStream of any changes to the project specifications.
  5. PowerStream will perform a post-inspection to verify the project is complete and was done according to the specifications, and then issue payment.

Ý

Why is PowerStream providing an incentive for these customers?
This program has been developed in cooperation with the Ontario Power Authority (OPA). The OPA’s mission is to ensure a long-term reliable and sustainable supply of electricity for the province. A major focus for the OPA is providing programs and initiatives that encourage better conservation and demand management of electricity for all sectors across the province.

Electricity incentives, such as ERIP, assist commercial customers to make commitment to proceed with the most energy-efficient technologies, equipment and systems.

Ý

Can I hire my own consultant to validate my proposal for the program?
We encourage customers to consult with or obtain assistance from industry professionals to ensure that their design, proposals and installations best meet their needs. PowerStream will engage a consultant of its choice to review any applications or ay completed projects as appropriate.

Ý

What if I don’t realize any savings after investing all this money?
The qualifying technologies are tried and true with known performance parameters. There are many variables that could affect their performance and we suggest that you discuss these with your designers and installers.

Ý

Can I also apply for funding through other organizations?
Yes, we encourage customers to take advantage of all funding available. Please also note all funding will be considered in determining the amount of the PowerStream incentive.

Ý

The project that I would like to undertake uses a simple straight forward technology. Can it be included under the prescriptive program?

The prescriptive program is limited at this time to a fixed number of technologies. We will not be changing the qualifying technologies but we will review and update the qualifying list periodically to keep up with evolving technologies.

Ý

How long will it take to process my application?

Our goal is to take no more than 10 business days to approve applications and also 10 business days to issue incentive payments.

Ý

How long do I have to apply and complete my application?
A project application must be submitted to PowerStream for approval, upon which time a PowerStream representative will contact you to schedule an inspection of the project facility. Eligible projects under this program must be completed (be in-service) and delivering kilowatt savings within one year of being pre-approved. Applications for the ERIP program will not be accepted after December 31, 2010 and all projects must be completed no later than December 1, 2011.

Ý

How do I get my products considered for the ERIP program?
If you are a manufacturer of similar technologies and would like your product considered for this program, please submit an email to submissions@powerauthority.on.ca. In the subject line, please specify "ERIP Technologies", and include summary details on your product and your contact information in the body of the email.
