PowerStream is proud to be a corporate sponsor of the Community Safety Village of York Region.

The Safety Village, located at the Bruce's Mill Conservation Area on Stouffville Road, is a miniature town where primary school children learn about fire, traffic and electrical safety. The village also hosts an annual open house event for the general public.

The outdoor electrical safety display is located along a street in the village and includes a scaled down replica transformer station that "supplies" a three-phase circuit which feeds the two adjacent buildings; one with a pad-mount transformer to an underground service and the other with a pole-mount transformer to overhead service.

The main safety messages demonstrated by the display, and included in the curriculum the children learn, are the dangers of climbing hydro towers, poles and fences.

•Danger! Never enter a substation. Call the hydro company for help.
•Fly your kite in open spaces far away from hydro wires.
•Never climb trees near hydro wires.
•Don't climb hydro poles or towers. The kitty will come down by itself.
•Don't sit or play on the green box. It's an electrical transformer.
•Keep at least 10 meters away from fallen wires.

To further illustrate these safety messages are a cat sitting on top of the pole-mount transformer, a kite tangled in the overhead lines, a ball inside the transformer station fence and a miniature high-voltage transmission tower.

The design, construction and sponsorship of the display were a cooperative effort among the York Region electrical utilities – PowerStream, Hydro One and Newmarket Hydro.
